BTEC Level 3

What is a BTEC National Award?

A BTEC National Award is a practical, work related course. You learn by completing projects and assignments that are based on realistic workplace situations, activities and demands. You focus on a particular subject area and develop a range of specialist skills and knowledge.

It is equivalent to one A level so when you have finished the course you can use it to get a job or use it alongside other qualifications to go into further or higher education.


What are the entry requirements?

You must have achieved both of the following:
• The entry requirements to the Sixth Form at Castle Community College or Walmer Science College
• Grade B at GCSE PE or a Merit at Level 2 BTEC Sport Diploma


What is the course structure?

The course is made up of six units – three core units and three specialist units.

1. Core Units:
• Unit 1 – The Body in Action
• Unit 2 – Health & Safety in Sport
• Unit 3 – Training & Fitness for Sport

2. Specialist Units:
• Unit 5 – Sports Development
• Unit 6 – Fitness Testing
• Unit 7/8 – Practical Sport
 

How is the course assessed?

All units are assessed and graded, and an overall grade for the qualification is awarded.


What can I do at the end of the course?

If you want to get a job straight away you could work in:
• Sports Centres
• Leisure Centres
• Outdoor Activities Centres

If you decide to go to university or college and you have other qualifications, you could take a degree or a BTEC Higher National in subjects such as:
• Sports Studies
• Leisure Management
• Recreation Management
• Teacher Training
