Citizenship
Citizenship is the study of the rights and responsibilities of individuals within society. The aim of Citizenship is to encourage young people to become well-informed, mature adults, who have the skills, knowledge and confidence to play an active part in our democratic society, and make a positive contribution to the community.
- Topics studied at key stage 4 include:
- How our democratic system works and why it is important to participate in the electoral process
- What the economy is and why we pay taxes
- What our rights and responsibilities are within the law
- The role and influence of media within society
- Multicultural Britain and the need for respect, understanding and tolerance
- The UK and its relationship with the EU and rest of the world
In teaching these topics, lessons will focus on discussions and group activities, in order to enable students to develop their own opinions, as well as skills of enquiry, communication and participation.
