General Principles 

The English department aims to try and enrich the quality of our students’ lives by exposing them to as much literature and the imaginative worlds of others as possible.  We try to foster a sense of enjoyment and fulfillment within pupils and provide structured opportunities for them to reflect on their own experience so they may understand themselves, and the world around them, better.  We aim to develop the imagination of pupils, to add to their critical thinking skills and powers of expression and ensure that they are effective communicators.  They learn about language by using it.

Students will study a variety of texts: novels, short stories, poetry, drama, film and media texts. They will learn how to communicate in both formal and informal ways, and in a variety of writing styles.  We also use planning as an invaluable tool for preparing what to write, annotation to guide ideas, proofreading to improve writing and editing skills to improve punctuation, spelling and grammar. All these skills are transferable across the curriculum.
