Geography

Geography is the study of the world in which we live. The aim of the department is to ensure each student develops an awareness of their Global Environment – this includes the Physical and Human aspects and the Environmental issues facing mankind to-day.

All students follow geography at Key Stage 3 in line with the National Curriculum.  Units studied include:-

Map work  Development Settlement  Weather & Climate
Rivers and Flooding Dangerous Planet Rivers & Flooding Connections
Coastal Environments Brazil Italy  World of Sport
Global Fashion Industry  Tourism Population and industrial Location

In Years 10 and 11 Geography is one of the subjects on offer through the option system.  Students follow the OCR Syllabus A.

The department utilises aerial photographs, videos, maps, fieldwork and ICT to encourage motivation. Fieldwork is an important part of Geography.  Students will be offered a variety of field visits relating to the National Curriculum units studied in KS3 Geography. Class work and homework tasks provide a wide variety of intellectually stimulating activities.  Students are also encouraged to watch the “News” and broadcasts relating to their studies to broaden their general geographical knowledge.

Students may undertake their work as a whole class, in groups, in pairs or individually.  The work is matched to the students’ ability either by providing support material or by the use of open-ended exercises, which allow each student to achieve his/her full potential.  Individual effort and enterprise are rewarded through a merit award system.

The Geography department is a corporate member of the National Geographical Association; this enables staff to keep fully informed of curriculum changes and new teaching approaches.
