Humanities
The Humanities department is a lively department which is developing an increasingly integrated approach to the study of Humanities. By focusing on the links between the different subjects, while developing a more hands-on approach, the department is aiming to bring the whole subject area alive for the pupils.
At KS3, the pupils study History, Geography and RE for a total of 5 lessons per week. In 2006 a new project was introduced in Year 7, whereby classes stay with the same teacher for all three subjects. It is planned that as this year group progresses through KS3, they will keep the same teacher for these subjects. Different learning style are encouraged within the department and there is a developing focus on learning through experiential activities.
During KS3, pupils are encouraged to take part in the after school Humanities Club. Highlights have included: the making of a video documentary to celebrate the 70th Anniversary of the school; research into cooking and eating a Medieval feast; the reinactment of the Battle of Hastings; and
the making of weapons for Medieval reinactments. Future projects include archaeology, webcasting and a video investigation.
In KS4, pupils can choose to study GCSEs in History and Humanities. Each subject develops a wide range of skills that are highly sought after in the worlds of work and further education. History features the Weimar Republic and Nazi Germany as case-studies and Humanities features the development of a broader approach to issues such as Environmentalism, Prejudice and Persecution, and Culture and Belief.
During KS5, pupils are able to choose from GCSE Sociology and AS General Studies, Law, Psychology and Sociology. Pupils therefore have a wide range of choices that are appropriate to employment and further education.
