Special Educational Needs

All students are special and have specific educational needs. We take great care to find out individual strengths and weaknesses of all new Year 7 students. We visit primary schools to consult with Headteachers and their staff and collect information about new students as well as carrying
out our own testing programme. In this way we can build a clear picture of each student's abilities and decide what extra help is needed.

Information is shared with subject teachers so that they can develop programmes appropriate to the needs of individuals in their classes. In-class support is given where necessary and is monitored by the Co-ordinators for SEN. Information is made available to all staff as to which students have specific needs and advice is given as to the best methods of support is given.

The new emphasis on Literacy has benefited all, but particularly those with reading difficulties. Our summer colleges are well attended. The college works within the parameters of the DfES SEN Code of Practice.

Castle Community College is a designated college for students with physical disabilities. Our well-equipped medical room, physio room and single-story site mean that mobility is not a problem and with support from welfare assistants, disabled students are able to follow a full educational programme, including Physical Education. Visits from the college nurse and medicals can all be carried out in private and in comfort.

Copies of the college's Special Educational Needs policy are available: please contact the college. Booklets published by the Department for Education and Employment covering all aspects of Special Educational Needs are also available.
