Technology
Design & Technology is around us in everyday life, even though we do not think about it. We aim to show students practical ways in which to use the skills they acquire, to produce quality products for their intended end user.
The subject of Design Technology is a combination of Food Technology, Resistant Materials and Graphic Products. The students gain experience of working with a range of materials while solving selected design problems. They improve their knowledge and understanding of both designing and manufacturing methods and techniques, and also the need and opportunity for designing in a modern and competitive market place. All students from the start of Key Stage 3 use modern industrial practices and equipment.
Design Technology is a subject offered throughout the five years of secondary education from 11 to 16 years. The courses on offer are all in line with National Curriculum guidelines.
The students have to design and manufacture solutions that satisfy differing end user requirements based on their research, and a design specification. In Key Stage 3 the students study technology in all areas. In Key Stage 4 the students may study for a Design Technology GCSE qualification, either Food Technology, Graphic Products or Resistant Materials.
As Design Technology is a design driven but practical based subject, there will be small quantities of materials/ingredients needed to be brought in from home and a small nominal charge for certain materials may be made. All students will need protective clothing in the form of an apron for Resistant Materials and Graphic Products, a bibbed apron for Food Technology (these can be purchased through college).
Homework forms a very important part of this subject area which students are expected to participate in and is set regularly. It will take a variety of forms linked to a major project or subject specific tasks.
